His way beneath the burning eye
Of heaven makes money, all his shares
Of history hedged, his future high.
He shifts, the scalping pioneer,
The brave, the baron of the mine,
Perfumes his reeking hands, and prays
His shining great-grandson to dine.
Behold a modern wonder! King
Is the washed child with wife for queen:
These with a nicer pride receive
The flattery of the machine.
The daily bath renews the skin
The elevators wing the feet
The ice-cubes in the enameled box
Can keep beer cool and butter sweet.
